Expect the Unexpected

No amount of preparation truly prepares you for the whirlwind of having kittens. When you think you've covered every hazard, those clever kitties will find something you've overlooked. It's not a flaw in planning; it's a testament to their curious nature.

The Initial Overwhelm

Bringing kittens into your home is like opening a new chapter filled with mystery and excitement. I vividly remember the first night — Cleo and Kyro exploring every corner, each crevice a new adventure. The sound of tiny paws scampering across the floor was endearing and a constant reminder of my new responsibilities.

Furniture: A Playground in Disguise

Forget about buying new furniture when you get cats, especially kittens. Their toys and playgrounds include just about everything you own. Curtains became slides, and Cleo and Kyro competed daily to see who could climb the highest. Needless to say, my once pristine curtains now bear the artistic markings of their claws. Another favourite was my books. Kyro loved (and still does at times) to knock my books off their shelves. I would put them back in their place and turn my back, only for him to do it again. He preferred to play this game in the middle of the night when I was ready for bed. You cannot tell me that this was unplanned.

The Battle of the Curtains

Curtains were an unexpected battleground. Despite my attempts to keep them off limits, Cleo and Kyro saw them as vertical playgrounds. Their daring feats of agility as they scaled the fabric were impressive and slightly terrifying. Consider using citrus spray to protect your curtains and furniture from climbing adventures. Scratching Posts Vs Your Belongings

Despite investing in multiple scratching posts, Cleo and Kyro believed my furniture was the ultimate scratching paradise. It's as if they had a radar for the items I most wanted to protect. Consider investing in scratching deterrent tape to sway their affections toward designated scratching areas. (Paid Ad)

Trial and Error

The process involved a lot of experimentation. Some posts were too short, others too soft. Eventually, a combination of sisal and carpet textures appealed to them, and strategically placing these around the house helped save my furniture, for the most part.

The Cable Conundrum

Cleverly concealed cables? Think again. To Cleo, my meticulous attempts at cable management were a challenge. The more I tried to hide them, the more determined she became. It was a game she never tired of playing, so I had to get creative with cable covers that blended with my decor and attempted to divert her interest.

The Game of Wits

It became a game of wits between us. I would secure a cable, and she would find a new approach to reach it. This ongoing challenge kept me on my toes and taught me to anticipate her next moves.

Water Fountain Fiasco

Kyro created a mini water park in my living room one night by toppling over their water fountain. Cleo, ever the accomplice, played lookout. I taped the fountain down to prevent further aquatic disasters (he decided this was a game he liked enough to repeat multiple times). Then he discovered a new game. Pull the fountain's USB cable from the plug. This meant I constantly had to check that the fountain was connected and fully functioning, thanks to his new game.  Consider investing in a sturdy, wireless, spill-proof water fountain to keep your floors dry and your cats hydrated. Finding the Right Fit

After several trials, I found a fountain that was both stable and appealing to them. The sound of flowing water captivates Cleo and Kyro, encouraging them to drink more and stay hydrated.

Everything is a Climbing Frame

They will if there’s the slightest opportunity to get into or onto something. I’ve learned to see things from their perspective. With cats, anything is possible. It's a lesson in humility and creativity as you try to outsmart their next move.

The Joy of Exploration

Their love for exploration reminded me of the joy found in simple things. Watching them discover new heights and hidden nooks made me wonder and appreciate their adventurous spirits.

The Art of Cat-Proofing

No room is out of bounds. It's vital to cat-proof every space before they discover it. Cleo and Kyro were like little explorers, claiming every new territory as theirs. From the moment they arrived, it was clear that every nook and cranny needed attention. Consider using cat-proofing kits that offer door and window locks for extra security. Depending on your doors or windows, many fantastic alternatives are on the market these days.

Room by Room

Cat-proofing isn't a one-time task. It involves constant assessment and adaptation. By tackling each room individually, I've created a safer environment for my feline companions.

Chew Toys: Everything's Fair Game

Despite a basket of designated chew toys, Cleo had a penchant for book corners and hoodie laces. Cables, covered or not, were always prime targets. Consider using chew deterrent sprays to protect your belongings from their relentless curiosity.

Adapting to Their Needs

I've learned to adapt by providing a variety of textures and toys that cater to their instincts. This approach protects my belongings and keeps them mentally and physically stimulated.

Personal Cat-Proofing

Living with kittens also meant adapting my wardrobe. I learned to avoid summer dresses, as Kyro and Cleo saw them as moving curtains. It was a small price for their delightful company, but it’s worth considering if you’re a fan of flowy fashion.

Embracing Change

These changes have taught me to embrace flexibility and creativity daily. It's a constant reminder of the joy and companionship Cleo and Kyro bring, making every adjustment worthwhile.
