A Little Quirk from My Cat Kyro

As a devoted cat lover living in the heart of London, I’ve come to cherish the little quirks and routines that make my indoor cats, Kyro and Cleo, so uniquely themselves. But recently, I’ve noticed something that’s become a daily ritual — Kyro sniffing my breath, then licking his lips or chops afterwards. It’s a habit I hadn’t really paid much attention to at first, but now it’s become a part of our daily bonding routine, and honestly, I’ve been curious about what it means.
So, I decided to do a little digging — reading up on feline behaviour, consulting some animal behaviour resources, and of course, asking around with fellow cat parents. What I discovered not only helped me understand Kyro better but also deepened my appreciation for how wonderfully complex our feline friends truly are.
Today, I want to share my journey of understanding this adorable habit, what it might mean from a cat’s perspective, and (most importantly) how it’s strengthened my bond with Kyro. If you’ve ever wondered why your cat does something similar, stick around — I’ve got some insights, personal stories, and tips to share.

Kyro’s Quirky Habit: Sniffing My Breath and Licking His Lips
Every day, without fail, Kyro approaches me, sits on my lap, purrs, and then leans in to sniff my face — specifically, my breath. Sometimes, he even licks his lips or chops right after. It’s such a consistent part of his behaviour that it’s become a little ritual we share.
At first, I just thought it was cute or maybe a way he was saying hello, but then I started wondering: Is there a reason behind this?
And so began my little quest to understand what Kyro’s sniffing and licking might mean.
A Personal POV: Living with Two Indoor Cats in London
City life [Image by Pixabay]
Living with Kyro and Cleo in a bustling city like London has its charms and challenges. Our apartment might be small, but it’s filled with love, toys, and plenty of cosy spots for naps.
Kyro, in particular, has always been a little more expressive and quirky. He’s the type of cat who seems to communicate with a look, a purr, or a tiny gesture like sniffing your face. Cleo, on the other hand, is more reserved but equally adorable.
As a cat parent, I’ve learned that understanding your cats’ behaviours — no matter how strange they seem — is part of the journey. It’s a daily adventure filled with discovery, patience, and a whole lot of love.
What Could Kyro’s Sniffing and Lip-Licking Mean?
Based on my research and experience, here are some possible reasons why Kyro might be sniffing my breath and licking his lips afterwards:
1. Scent Exchange and Communication
Cats use scent as a primary way of communicating. When Kyro sniffs my breath, he’s probably picking up my scent — what I’ve eaten, my mood, and even tiny pheromones. It’s his way of connecting with me on a very personal level.
2. Curiosity and Familiarity
Cats are naturally curious creatures. Your breath contains a lot of interesting smells — food remnants, scents from outside, or even your own natural scent. Licking his lips could be a sign that he’s processing these smells and feeling comforted by the familiarity.
3. Greeting Rituals
Many cats greet their humans with nose touches or head butts. Kyro’s sniffing could be a variation of that, a way of saying hello and checking in with his favourite human.
4. Appetite or Anticipation
Sometimes, lip-licking is associated with the anticipation of food. If he notices my breath smells like dinner or treats, he might be licking his lips in expectation or excitement.
5. Stress or Anxiety?
Less likely in my case, but some cats lick their lips as a sign of stress or discomfort. Since Kyro only does this after sniffing my breath and not in stressful situations, I don’t think that’s the case here.
What Does This Say About Kyro’s Personality?

Kyro’s behaviour showcases how intuitive and affectionate he is. His sniff-and-lick routine seems to be a mix of curiosity, love, and his way of saying “You’re my human, and I trust you.” It makes me feel incredibly special that he’s so attentive to my scent and interaction.
It also made me realise how much cats communicate beyond words. Their behaviours, no matter how weird they seem, often have a story behind them.
How Can You Understand Your Cat’s Quirks Better?
Living with cats is about patience and observation. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way to better understand our feline friends’ habits:
- Watch for context: When does your cat do this? Is it after eating, during playtime, or when they’re feeling sleepy?
- Check their body language: Is your kitty relaxed, purring, or tense? This can tell you if they’re comfortable or stressed.
- Remember their personality: Every cat is unique. What’s normal for one may not be for another.
- Engage in positive interactions: Spend quality time with your cat — petting, talking, or just sitting quietly. It enhances trust and understanding. (Paid Ad)
A Love Letter to My Furry Companion
Kyro’s little habits, even the sniffing and lip-licking, have become a part of the beautiful tapestry of our daily lives. They remind me how special it is to share my London apartment with such a curious, loving creature.
Every pattern of behaviour, no matter how small, is a window into his world. And I feel lucky every day to be part of it.
Final Thoughts & Embracing Your Cat’s Unique Behaviour
If your cat does something similar, take it as a sign of their trust and affection. Cats have their own language, and it’s up to us to listen, observe, and appreciate the quirks that make them so wonderfully unique.
Remember, understanding your cat’s behaviours can deepen your bond and make living together even more joyful. Trust me, as a Londoner, busy and often stressed, these little moments with Kyro make life sweeter.
