The Pros and Cons of Neutering/Spaying Your Pet: A Journey with Cleo and Kyro

When it comes to making decisions about our furry family members, it’s never straightforward. Neutering or spaying your pet is one of those big decisions that come with trials and triumphs. Let me share my experience with my beloved indoor cats, Cleo and Kyro.

The Pros Vs Cons
Pros
Health Benefits: Neutering or spaying can reduce the risk of certain cancers and infections. Cleo and Kyro’s health is my top priority, and knowing this helped me make the decision. Neutering or spaying also potentially increases their lifespan, allowing more years of companionship and joy.
Behavioural Improvements: Reduced aggression and decreased territorial marking are common benefits. While Cleo was always gentle, Kyro’s feisty nature needed a little mellowing. This change has made our home a more peaceful place.
Population Control: With so many animals in shelters, spaying and neutering help control the pet population, ensuring more animals find loving homes. Knowing we're part of a more significant effort to reduce overpopulation feels good.
Cons
Surgical Risks: Like any surgery, there are risks involved. The thought of Cleo and Kyro undergoing anaesthesia was nerve-wracking. I had to trust the vet’s expertise and remind myself of the long-term benefits.
Post-Operative Care: The healing period can be challenging. We'll discuss this later as we dive into my sleepless nights and inventive attempts to prevent them from wreaking havoc.
Cost: While it’s an investment in their health, the initial cost can be a consideration for many pet owners. However, many clinics offer affordable options, and some communities have programs to assist with the expenses.

Preparing for the Procedure
Before the procedures, I delved into research. I wanted to be ready for anything. I purchased calming sprays and plugs, onesies and cones, a playpen, a mobile litter tray, and paper litter pellets. I even created a calming sounds playlist and gathered acceptable toys to occupy them. I thought I had everything covered. Little did I know that cats don’t play by the rules. You fit into their plans, not the other way around. This experience made me understand how accurate the jokes about cats being our masters genuinely are. Give in—you will eventually!

My Personal Experience: The Trials and Triumphs
1. Keeping Them Separated
From the moment I brought them home, Cleo and Kyro were inseparable. Trying to keep them apart post-surgery was like separating peanut butter from jelly. Whenever I was with one, the other would look me in the eyes with heart-melting eyes as if to say, "Have you forgotten me?" It was heart-wrenching but necessary for their recovery.
2. The Great Escape Artist
Kyro, my little Houdini, managed to break through the fabric netting of his cat playpen. His eagerness to explore was relentless, and I quickly realised that containing his adventurous spirit would be a full-time job. I learned that no barrier was too great for Kyro’s determination.

3. Keeping Them Calm
Cats and calmness don’t always go hand in hand. Cleo and Kyro were determined to jump and play despite my best efforts. It became a game of trial and error, trying different toys and distractions to keep them entertained without moving too much. I discovered that laser pointers and puzzle feeders helped redirect their energy. (Paid Ad)
4. The Grooming Dilemma
Keeping them from grooming their surgical sites was a task and a half. Cleo, especially, had a knack for wriggling out of her little suit every chance. I had to be constantly alert, ready to put it back on at a moment’s notice. It was a test of patience and quick reflexes.
5. A Slow Healing Process
Cleo’s wound took its sweet time to heal. I found myself anxiously checking it daily, hoping for progress. Her resilience taught me patience, but it was a harsh lesson. I frequently consulted with the vet, who reassured me that everything was healing as it should. At one point, I was instructed to take daily photos of her wound and send them on for further inspection.

6. The Cone Chronicles
Kyro’s escapades with his cones were legendary. From fabric to inflatable, inward to outward, I tried them all. Yet, somehow, he always found a way to remove or manoeuvre around them. He even managed to wear one like a tutu! It was as if he viewed it as a personal challenge. Eventually, I found a combination that worked, but not before many laughs and sighs.
7. Medication Mayhem
Administering medication was another adventure. Cleo and Kyro took different approaches— Cleo would hide while Kyro would engage in a game of chase. It took creativity and a lot of treats to get through this phase. I became a master at disguising pills in their favourite snacks.
8. Sleepless Nights
I won’t lie; those nights were tough. Worrying about their comfort and health kept me awake. Every slight noise had me jumping out of bed to check on them. My coffee consumption increased during this period! I learned to cherish the rare moments of peace.

9. The Unexpected Tasmanian Devil
After Kyro’s surgery, I expected him to be groggy and calm (as explained by the vet post-op and most of the research I had read before the day). Instead, I witnessed a whirlwind of energy — my Tasmanian Devil. It was the opposite of what I’d been told, and I had to adapt quickly to his unexpected burst of liveliness. This taught me to expect the unexpected with cats.
10. Vet on Speed Dial
Throughout this journey, my vet became my lifeline. Having them on speed dial provided reassurance and guidance whenever I was unsure. It’s always comforting to know help is just a call away. Their patience and expertise were invaluable.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
This experience taught me that while the road can be bumpy, the benefits of neutering and spaying are worth it. Cleo and Kyro are healthier and happier, and I’ve gained a deeper understanding of patience and adaptability. Mistakes were made, but they became stepping stones to better care. I’ve also learned to embrace the unpredictability of life with cats.

Investing in pet recovery suits and adjustable inflatable cones can make healing smoother for those considering neutering or spaying their pets. These products offer comfort and ease, making them worth consideration. Additionally, calming sprays and puzzle feeders can significantly aid recovery.
IMPORTANT: If, like me, you had the daunting task of limiting their movements and separating them as instructed post-op, I urge you not to get a fabric playpen in case you have a Houdini cat like my Kyro. Instead, invest in one that can withstand wear and tear. I recommend this one. (Paid Ad)
