A World of Words: How Reading Transformed My Life

Having come to England at age 10, I was introduced to the English language not merely through formal classes or textbooks, but through the stories and worlds depicted in books. For me, reading became a bridge—connecting me to a new culture, a new way of expressing myself, and ultimately, a new sense of belonging. English was not my first language, but within the pages of books, I found my voice, my imagination, and a lifelong love that continues to this day.

My journey into the world of words was shaped by circumstance and the kindness of friends. As a teenager, I was blessed with friends who shared my passion for reading, and their love of literature inspired me to explore beyond my comfort zone. Whether through novels, poetry, or essays, books became my sanctuary—a place where I could escape, learn, and grow.

Today, whether I’m reading or writing, words bring me peace. They are my refuge, my inspiration, and my way of connecting with the world. This is my story—how a love for reading has shaped my life and continues to be a source of healing and joy.

My Favourite Book

Since the moment I first discovered Wild Swans by Jung Chang, it has become more than just a book; it is a trusted companion on my journey of understanding and self-discovery. I’ve read it countless times—each reading revealing new layers, new insights, and a deeper connection to the stories that unfold within its pages.

What makes Wild Swans so extraordinary is its raw honesty and vivid storytelling. Jung Chang’s detailed account of her family’s tumultuous history in China offers a window into a world of resilience, sacrifice, and transformation. Every time I revisit her words, I find myself drawn into the lives of her ancestors—strong women, brave revolutionaries, and ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.

This book has a way of teaching me patience and empathy, reminding me that history is layered and complex. It encourages me to look beyond the surface and seek the stories that lie hidden beneath—stories of hope, pain, and perseverance that echo through generations.

Wild Swans is more than just a memoir; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the human soul. With each reading, I feel a little more connected to my own roots, my own struggles, and the resilience needed to navigate life’s challenges. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest times, there is strength—strength that can be passed down through the ages. (Paid Ad)

Discovering a New World Through Books

As a young child, I struggled with language. My first words in my native tongue, and my early attempts to speak English, were filled with hesitation. But I was curious—eager to understand the stories my friends loved to share, the jokes they told, and the characters they admired.

It was through reading that I began to learn the English language. I devoured picture books, simple stories, and eventually, more complex novels. Each book was a door into a new world—a world filled with adventures, emotions, and vivid characters. Slowly, my vocabulary grew, my comprehension deepened, and I started to see myself reflected in stories that once felt distant.

Books introduced me to the richness of the English language and showed me the beauty of words in all their forms—poetry, prose, dialogue, and description. They taught me that language isn’t just about grammar; it’s about expression, emotion, and connection.

Friends and the Love of Literature

During my teenage years, I was fortunate to have friends who shared my love of books. We would spend hours exchanging our latest reads, discussing characters, and debating themes. Their enthusiasm fuelled my own passion and opened my eyes to new genres, authors, and styles.

Sharing stories with friends made reading even more meaningful. It became a social act—an exchange of ideas, perspectives, and dreams. Our conversations helped me understand that books are not just a personal escape but a way to connect and grow with others.

Through these friendships, I developed confidence in my language skills. I began to read aloud, write my thoughts about stories, and experiment with words myself, using poetry as my private new favourite form of expression. Reading was no longer just a pastime; it was a vital part of my identity.

The Power of Words in My Life Today

Today, my love for reading remains as strong as ever. Whether I’m curled up with a novel, exploring poetry, or reading articles online, words continue to bring me peace. They soothe my mind, inspire my creativity, and help me navigate life’s challenges.

Writing has also become an extension of my love for words. Whether journaling, composing poems, or crafting stories, I find that expressing myself through language is a powerful means of healing and understanding. (Paid Ad)

Books have taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of taking a different perspective. They remind me that language is a gift—a bridge that connects us across differences and helps us find common ground.

The Ongoing Journey

My journey with words is ongoing. I continue to seek new stories, challenge myself with different genres, and explore the vast universe of literature. Each book I read enriches my vocabulary, deepens my understanding, and fuels my love for language.

I hope my story inspires others to embrace reading—whether you’re learning a new language, seeking comfort, or simply looking for a way to connect with the world. Books can be a lifelong companion, a source of peace, and a pathway to self-discovery.

Warm Disclaimer: Please remember, everyone’s relationship with reading and language is unique. If you’re learning a new language or using reading as a form of healing, be patient with yourself. Books are powerful tools, but if you’re experiencing emotional or mental health challenges, consider seeking support from a professional. Your journey is valid, and help is available.
